Ecological Building Specialist
Build sustainable landscapes with your expertise in building trades and curiosity for building ecology.
Bring your trade skills and curiosity to Fourth River to be part of a team developing ecological products and building approaches that enable homeowners in the Pittsburgh area to live more sustainably. As an ecological building specialist your knowledge of building materials, natural building techniques, building science, and building code will complement technical hands-on work. We take pride in hard work and exceptional construction of common work such as fences, retaining walls, stairs, earthworks, custom fabrication, ponds, drainage, decks and flatwork. You’ll be responsible for managing procurement, machine operation, worksite setup, and ongoing maintenance. The specific role will be adapted to your specialization and level of experience. The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of experience in a dedicated trade such as carpentry, masonry, excavation, hardscape, or similar. Lead Gardener

Join us in the rewarding role of Lead Gardener, where you’ll guide the transformation of landscapes into vibrant ecological habitats. Your primary responsibility will be to implement meticulous hands-on care and project planning to enhance biodiversity and aesthetic appeal.
In this role, you’ll collaborate closely with clients to understand their preferences and environmental goals, translating them into well-crafted garden designs. Your expertise in plants and landscaping principles will be crucial as you recommend suitable species, materials, and habitat elements that support local ecosystems. Part of the job will be remote work as you coordinate plant orders, scheduling and project logistics. Gardening work will include planting, pruning, mulching, and ongoing garden maintenance, ensuring each garden thrives.
Ideal candidates will bring over 5 years of experience in horticulture or related fields, with a strong foundation in both hands-on gardening and design planning. Your passion for ecological restoration and commitment to enhancing natural environments will drive our efforts to create resilient, beautiful landscapes that benefit both clients and the environment.

Office Manager – Part Time
Remote position with occasional onsite errands in the Pittsburgh area.
Work alongside a dedicated team to complete essential business operations, including payroll processing, bookkeeping, account management, log maintenance, purchasing coordination, order fulfillment, and client interactions. Given our involvement with plants and construction materials, proficient vocabulary in these areas is vital for effective communication and accurate financial management. This role also includes opportunities to contribute to social media engagement, marketing campaigns, photography projects, and promotional activities.
